Really loved Shazam and Captain Marvel.

New intro?

I think they are obsessed with Dark Phoenix because the version in the animated show was quite popular…Loved Captain Marvel! It's one of those movies I like more and more the more I think it. Usually the opposite is the case. And the meta level is sooooo strong. It's kind of in a league of its own.

I'm generally not interested in comic/super hero movies, but there are many that I have loved watching. The del Toro Hellboy movies are some of my favorites, and although I haven't had time to see it yet, I am excited to see Joker. I am continually surprised at how people are willing to defend the censorship of art, even nodding to the extreme subjectivity of the qualification of said art. The people who bother me more are the ones who blame art for people's actions. People are responsible for people's actions.

Fast colour, it must have been a REAL quiet release!

Nice list. I’m saddened by ‘Fast Color.’ I haven’t seen it but was excited for it because we almost saw it at SXSW last year and I like Mbatha-Raw. I was also pleased that you put ‘Glass’ in the middle, as I was simultaneously entertained and disappointed 😂 I would swap 1 and 2 because there was more at stake for ‘Endgame’ to disappoint, when it did anything but. And I do think it deserves an Oscar nomination for the time, work, effort, etc. that it represents…and the acting of Downey, Evans, Hemsworth Johansson and Renner was fantastic – especially because you can see how they’ve all fully grown and developed these heroes into complete, flawed yet inspiring heroes.

As to ‘Joker’: Phoenix deserves the nomination for sure and possibly the win (I’m quite partial to Adam Driver in ‘Marriage Story’ at the moment). The scene in the late night studio was one of the best scenes in any movie, but especially superhero movies, ever. Seeing him snap completely and become the Joker in that moment was so amazing and disturbing. And M and I debated the films messaging a lot (she liked a superhero movie again 😂). We questioned if the final scene was the moment that pushed the message to something of aggrandizing the violence of a broken man as celebratory…? While we didn’t see it that way, we are of sound minds and not prone to violence and public anger. But that isn’t everyone in our society, so I’m not sure.

I also wondered if the symbolism they were going for wasn’t both deeper and more on the nose for our political moment. Those that rioted and celebrated at the end were the marginalized and maligned of Gotham. A section of society that has continued to be left out of and behind in the discussions of the powerful, and so in desperation they turn to a man they don’t fully understand (deliberate choice of words 😉) that they think may change things – even if they don’t know that he’ll change it for the better.
