who cares about their money and Ironman….everything is money these days and they want to capitalize and at th end people will get disgusted….Lot's of people are doing sports for health purposes….

Man nicole walker was averaging 7:30 per mile at Ironman Arizona. Impressive! Her saddle looks a little high no 6:10?… doesn't seem to slow her down…

Good video, but am I the only one getting distracted by the fan like sound in the background?

wasn't the lack of ironman profits all to do with wanda/ whatever holding company, loading up ironman corp with all the debt from originally buying it and now it's paying something like $30m a year in interest payments?

re. getting young children into triahtlon, I largely disagree with this. children and early teens should be focussed on the individual sports so that they learn the fundamentals of swim, bike and run within the individual sports, as well as learning the culture. kids should be swimming with a swim club, getting a rounded foundation in all strokes and swim skills. for cycling the best place is probably cyclo-cross and other forms of off-road cycling and then if they've got the time a running club – cross-country and track.

otherwise you end up with another generation of triathletes who for example, can't flip turn, have terrible bike handling skills and generally have poor etiquette.

Learn from the Boy/Girl Scouts of America's mistakes. I need the list because it's long.

For Ironman the awards are not only a marketing tool, but a great market research tool as well. It provides a great deal of information about what triathletes look for, what they like and what not. Ironman can then adjust their (own) race portfolio accordingly. But in a franchise system, the different races are competitors to one another (with the CEO of Challenge Family even owning a race; just look at the discussions regarding Challenge Regensburg a few years back…).

Edit: Spelling corrected.

Kids will find it hard to get into Triathlon because school's don't mention it, Triathlon is expensive, and they are happy on their tablets.

I just realized I was on a group ride with Nicole a month ago… lol that’s funny. I had no idea who I was talking to.

Your thoughts on the profitability of WTC are interesting. Based on the gross numbers there is no reason WTC should not be profitable (Race fees, merchandise sales, licensing of the trademark, etc). Disney (not a low cost provider) has made a science of this and the Parks, et al. actually prop up most the other subsidiaries in that group. There's something else going on (Wanda's financial funny business..too many races, etc).. You should try to get an interview with Andrew Messick. While I think he may offer only the corporate line…you might be able to ferret out some facts. I'll buy some stock and get the reports as well as the 10K each quarter.

Ironman is a franchise and profits must be filtered away. £500+ to enter, 8% fee added on plus all that merchandise…. Since Wanda took over it’s gone bargain basement. Just look at the bags you get for “free” cheap and horrible.

December 3, 2019

Ironman is a brand. Buy it or leave it. And looking at the registrations: Next year I'll be racing in the Netherlands 70.3. The race sold out in less than a month one year before!!! So I guess the price(s) is okay.

December 3, 2019

Ironman used to feel like a triathlon. Now it feels sadly overly commercial – almost like going to Lourdes.

December 3, 2019

Any other parents out there who don’t want their kids to do triathlon (yet)? I love the sport but it doesn’t seem like a good fit for kids IMO. It’s expensive, isolating at times and lacks important aspects of other sports like teamwork and cooperation.

Need some lights in the background brotato’chip. Good info as always!

Great content!

Great video Taren! As always! Keeping me hype for 2020! 2 weeks and IM Tulsa training starts!

December 3, 2019

Ironman has to take the walmart route! Drop the prices and increase the # of participants. Raising the fees is killing our sport!

December 3, 2019

Sure there is no money in attracting 55 to 75 year olds into triathlon? We have plenty of time and money. A few concession would have to be made just as they probably do for kids in triathlon. A longer swim cutoff time for example. Is it worth the trouble to attract oldies? Has anybody tried it? Maybe 3 laps instead of 4 for the oldies.

December 3, 2019

Taren… Ironman is less than 10% of Wanda's revenue. It's all in the disclosures. (Plus the stock price decline is very old news, along with the nonsense spread by a few websites about it being about the tiny Ironman segment).
